The 3rd annual Krowe Records/ 93.1 The Fox Louisville Music Showcase will be Jan. 29th at Phoenix Hill Tavern. Last years show was a killer lineup and a great crowd. We are still growing the show and the concept and I think this years will be the biggest and best yet. We are booking the whole club this year so that opens it up for more deserving bands. We have learned some lessons over the last couple and think we have a handle on putting on a killer showcase. Last year we did a compilation cd with one song from every band and gave them out to the first couple hundred paid.

This year we plan on hiring a professional film crew to film one song from each band in the showcase and using it for a live dvd compilation. We have received some great national press in the past and we hope for the same if not more this year. We have also had label reps at the last two showcases and will do our best to secure some this year. We just got a lot of help in that department because Warner Brothers has moved their main operation out of NY and LA to Nashville. So some of the main people in the industry will be just 3 hours down 65 now. So hopefully if the lineup is good enough we can get some label interest.

PLUS WE NEED HELP. We found that the best way to get in some of these major publications is too submit work from freelance writers. We need writers to write reviews on the show and photographers to take pictures. The photo demon has some bad ass pics from last year up here: http://www.thephotodemon.com/Concerts/013009/

Tell us about Krowe Records - How it got started / What you all do / How long has it been around / Give an introduction to your company.

Krowe Records started in 2006 is a record label/ production company designed to bring new and creative ideas to the world of entertainment. Our main objective is to bring the world artistic and brilliant music. Krowe like many other indie labels was started by a group of music industry veterans/ investors for two reasons. First, it was created to be a launching pad for the Louisville based band Heaven Hill which has charted a top 40 active rock song with their single "going down" and has had huge digital sales success under Krowe. Second, this particular group of people saw a need for a record label willing to take the proper steps in developing artists and providing the tools to succeeded in the industry, then putting them in front of the proper people when the time is right.

The details of the Louisville Music Showcase When/Where/How Much/Whos Playing etc.

The LouisThumbnail imageville Music Showcase is a show designed to put the best Louisville has to offer on the national radar. We take the proceeds from the show to cover travel expenses for our invited media and music industry guests. So it's a win - win. Louisville artists get national and local exposure with the chance of furthering their career while our guests get to take in a show and mini vacation without any financial obligations. It's also a way a great for Krowe to search for the next artist we can't help but to sign. Our partners for the venue is Phoenix Hill tavern. It's a great venue for us because we can utilize multiple different rooms. The 2010 lineup is still in the works but the early response has been great. I would like to encourage any bands that want a chance to be on the show to email us. The 2010 date is Jan. 29th and It's always a $10 ticket.

Tell us the history of the Showcase.

The best part of this show is the last two years it has been a sell-out with 700 plus attendees. The community has really showed support in their local music. We have had over 20 different artists take part in the show. We have had media outlets such as Spin, Rolling Stone, Performer, and Music Connection in attendance. Label reps from majors Warner Brothers, Epic, Sony, and Wind-up. Not to mention a slew of indie labels, management, lawyers and booking agents. We had a nice article in Spin I will copy below.

Louisville KY, a music Mecca?

There was an article circulating in 1998 that Louisville, KY was striving to be the next Seattle. In the city known for horse races, baseball bats and Muhammad Ali there is quite a buzz in 2008 about an up and coming music scene. Louisville has most recently conceived acts like Days of the New and My morning Jacket. Currently there is a whole new crop of young rock bands making a national hum. Bands like Cabin and Wax Fang have gained national recognition recently for Louisville so I was on hand February 29th to witness a whole new croup of names. I had been in Louisville once before to see the underground legends Supafuzz. Ironically enough about 10 years later I am at the same club watching this new crop of Louisville bands. The venue is a multilayer club with an utterly cool vibe and an eccentric mix of concert goers. Legend has it the Gun’s and Roses song “Paradise City” which states “the grass is green and girls are pretty,” is about the city of Louisville. The girls are certainly pretty and these bands certainly bring them out in herds. So after a few jager shots and plenty of scenery I’m ready for some music. The first band to pound the oddly shaped stage is called Subrosa. Their music is the same emo/rock every band is emulating these days. I was impressed with the musicianship but their singer left me wanting more. There were some excellent music pieces but zero creativity in their melodies. Without an impressive image and not a single catchy tune I was left wishing I was once again in Louisville to see Supafuzz. This was supposed to be a crop of National contenders’ right? So ok I need to keep in mind these are local acts not seasoned vets. However, next up a pop driven band named Chamberflow. The music was reminiscing of a guitar driven Gavin Degraw. This is a band that knows how to write melodies and even though it’s hard to sniff out hits when you’re hearing songs for the first time shattering through a sub par PA. Chamberflow surely posses some great songs. Chamberflow lacks a bit in the energy department certainly knows their way around good song writing. I can positively see Chamberflow creating a legitimate national following. The next band was the feature act of the night. Krowe records recording artist Heaven Hill. It was pretty obvious the bulk of the sold out 900 plus concert goers were there to see them. I soon found out why. Heaven Hill is a band that hits the trifecta. Hit songs, power filled live show, and a great image. The front man is an absolute super star. I'd make an argument for Heaven Hill’s Front man as the model of what a superstar front man should be. The guy just commanded every eye in the house to be focused on him. That's the kind of amazing display of personality and flair that always draws people in. The front man aptly named “Chuck” had a few mishaps with some key changes and lyrics but his presence pulled him through. Heaven Hill found a role for backing tracks that they incorporated throughout songs and in between songs to alleviate dead space. With these tracks Heaven Hill added a clean artistic twist to an otherwise mainstream rock band. Their songs were well crafted backed with a great stage show carried by their charismatic rhythm section. Their music style is a fresh twist of the arena rock Hinder and Buckcherry are presently making popular. “Wait For Me”, a slow, balladic song, highlighted Chucks voice perfectly. He has a unique style, which is often interrupted with moments of power that reminded me of Scott Stapp. Chuck never strayed into screeching territory, however, and the tender, emotional lyrics still resonated with the crowd. I feel Krowe records have themselves a real derby contender here, that is if they can keep their blinders on during their music industry race. Next up was a band called In The Clear. This band was straight forward hard rock. A five piece band, tight, and with good stage chemistry. They encompass high-quality concrete song writing and musicianship. My only fear is in this every so competitive industry they may lack the “it” factor that is exceptionally important. Last and I do mean least the only remaining band certainly required a few more jager shots. On top of a uniquely bad singer this band seemed unprofessional and unprepared and as a former musician this drives me nuts.. Now I normally don’t throw a band totally under the bus but it irks me because there was a nice crowd available to see this contemptible band totally tank. It’s a shame that a few of the bands which played in a small but quaint space to the side of the main room dubbed the tap room were not featured more. One of these bands called Embertide reminded me of a rocked up Weezer. The little I saw I was graced by good songs with strong melodies. They will fight some image issues but their songs will win them some fans. The conclusion of the band I will fail to mention also ended my Louisville music scene experience. I met some great people, made some new friends and heard some fine music. When all's said and done Louisville seems to be in the race for a home run. I mean after all Louisville is the home of the champ.

What does an artist need to get on the bill for the up coming showcase? How will you be filtering out candidates... what are the minimums an act needs to have before they will be considered for the Showcase.

We are lookiThumbnail imageng for artists that shows Louisville in it's best light. We need artists who are ready to take the next step and can prove that with their music, image and live show. Right now we are just asking for myspace sites to make our decisions. The more professional the better. We have a panel consisting of 5 people who will help up make the decisions which includes myself, Teague Ridge the bass player from Heaven Hill who has a degree in music business from Belmont University. Grammy winning producer Gelnn Rosenstein, and two other industry professionals who wish to remain unnamed.

Many movers and shakers from the music industry will be in attendance for this event are there any important people who have RSVP for this years Showcase?

Well it's still early but we feel really good about who will be in town this year. Krowe has really expanded our presence in NashvillThumbnail imagee which will help us tremendously in getting the right people here. So as far as the industry side I think we have several major players here. I don't like to revel who exactly so the certain individuals can come in peace. They will all get music and a background on everyone performing as well as specific set time lists. So if they want to see a someone or talk to someone they can initiate it. Bands can be persistent to the point of annoying so we find its better to let someone show an interest to the band first. So far we are still waiting on responses from the media end. Obviously advertisers are spending less and media publications are downsizing as well. So that end has been tough. We have a partnership with SPIN and they have been great from the beginning and I expect a great article from them this year.
